Brief Colonial History

The American Colonial style evolved from the early 1700s, and was a manifestation of the imaginings and aspirations of the first colonists to settle America - and of their increasing prosperity. This attractive architectural home style was sustained until the American Revolution, when its appeal subsided. It was revitalized in the 1880s, and since then its attractiveness has continued unabated.

The early 1600s saw the foundation of a great wave of migration from Europe to North America, with the first of the English colonists arriving in Jamestown, Virginia on May 14, 1607.

Often departing England to flee political or religious persecution, and with few belongings, the early colonists on the other hand did bring something with them - the architectural and decorating styles of their homelands. Colonial homes are still a time honored classic and colonial house plans to build one are available.
